Our global
emergency
Climate change is a human emergency that affects us all. Nobody is immune from the devastating droughts, floods and heat waves that are unleashed almost daily across the planet.
But these consequences are unevenly felt around the world. Those who have done the least to contribute towards global heating also have the least resources to cope with it, due to deeply rooted climate injustices.
The starkest inequalities are seen in the Global South, where people emitting only a tiny carbon footprint are at the frontline of climate chaos - from sea level rises to crop failure, devastation of forest ecosystems to growing swathes of climate refugees.
But even in wealthy countries like the United States, there are signs of carbon inequality with the poorest suffering the worst consequences.
At the same time, grant-making is often biased and unjust with foreign-led organizations receiving the bulk of funding at the expense of local organizations working on the frontlines. In Africa - local and national NGOs received just 0.4% directly of all international humanitarian assistance.

Our Mission
To support communities living on the edge of extinction in seeking climate justice and building resilience. Where the impacts of climate change are already happening and where people are threatened with being displaced from their homes within the next two decades
To champion people-powered climate solutions, driven by local visionaries. Because we believe change happens best when it is delivered by those who are deeply rooted in the communities they serve
To disrupt current funding flows, by decentralizing the availability of finance to local community-based frontline organizations and social entrepreneurs
WOMEN
In delivering our mission, we put a strong emphasis on supporting women and girls who are most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, while holding the key to many of the boldest solutions that can help get us out of this crisis.
From collecting water for cooking and cleaning, using the land for livestock, foraging for food in rivers and reefs, and collecting firewood, women all over the planet use and interact with natural resources and ecosystems daily. In doing so, they make a huge contribution to the sustainable development of their communities, as well as to the maintenance of the planet’s ecosystems, biological diversity and natural resources.
2022 Themes
We have selected 4 climate themes that will orientate our support in 2022 - focusing on building the resilience of local people in our most vital planetary ecosystems that millions of people call their home.
Each theme has been selected to reflect the scale and breadth of the emergency we are living in.
Our Green Circle of Advisors will select pioneering recipient organisations around these different themes.
Deserts
The Great Green Wall: The Great Green Wall is the world’s most audacious climate initiative that aims to grow an 8000km green corridor across the width of Africa. The initiative is taking root on the southern edge of the Sahara desert - and is an unprecedented response to the climate emergency involving more than 20 African countries, aiming to grow green jobs, support women’s empowerment and enhance livelihood opportunities in the face of mass migration, food insecurity and conflict. We will work with frontline organisations and entrepreneurs to help advance progress in growing a wall of hope that is uniting an entire Continent.
Oceans
Coastal communities: Coastal communities hold an estimated 37% of the global population — they’re hubs of commerce and culture, and have fueled global development. Yet, for all their historic significance, these environments could be emptied out in the decades ahead as natural disasters intensify and sea levels rise. Small island states - like Tuvalu in the Pacific - are particularly vulnerable and could be wiped off the map by 2040. We will work with some of the frontline innovators in the ocean space that are helping to promote powerful solutions for coastal communities in the face of the highest stakes.
Forests
The Amazon Rainforest: The Amazon is under siege like never before. Deforestation and fire are once again on the increase, and protected areas and indigenous lands face increasing threats. The Amazon is a vital organ for our entire planet providing an important function to both the Earth’s water and carbon cycles. However, the Amazon is now emitting more carbon dioxide than it is able to absorb. We will work with indigenous communities and local women, whose intimate knowledge of the rainforest has made their work essential in the fight against deforestation and illegal activity.
Glaciers
The Arctic: The Arctic is where climate change is perhaps most visible to the eye - warming up to three times faster than the rest of the planet. Polar ice caps are melting as global warming causes climate change. We lose Arctic sea ice at a rate of almost 13% per decade, and over the past 30 years, the oldest and thickest ice in the Arctic has declined by a stunning 95%. If emissions continue to rise unchecked, the Arctic could be ice-free in the summer by 2040. Arctic Indigenous Peoples are on the frontline with their livelihoods and culture at major risk. We will support some of the pioneering communities fighting to save the Arctic, its culture and its people from mass extinction.
SPECIAL INITIATIVES
In addition to our 4 core priority areas, we will also launch a limited series of special initiatives in partnership with the NFT community.
GREAT APES
Great apes – humanity’s closest relatives - are rapidly losing much of their forest habitats to human activities such as agriculture, mining, illegal trading in bushmeat, palm oil and commercial logging. In Africa, they are predicted to lose a devastating 90% of their homelands by 2050. Compared to many other species, great apes are poor at migrating, as they have specific diets, low population densities and they reproduce slowly. As a result, many of their species may not be able to adapt in time to their changing circumstances. We will partner with pioneering organisations working to protect Great Apes by improving the effective management and protection of large areas outside of formally protected areas; stopping the illegal trade in ape products; establishing relevant conservation policies that eliminate ape poaching and unsustainable forest practices; and raising awareness of Great Apes conservation.
WOMEN & SOLAR
Some 600 million people in Africa don't have access to energy. Africa’s surface area has 40% of the world’s potential solar resources, but it houses just 1% of global solar capacity for generating electricity. With the right investment, Africa can become a renewable energy superpower. One of the most potent tools for increasing the effectiveness of women in climate change mitigation is renewable energy, which can help transform the lives of women by improving their health, providing them with better livelihood prospects, improving their education opportunities and more. In fact, it offers women many entrepreneurial avenues for further deployment of renewable energy, which in turn mitigates carbon emissions. renewable energy increases women’s relevance in society, shields them from harmful health effects of indoor pollution (through burning of biomass) and makes them agents of climate change mitigation through their involvement in renewable energy deployment.
DISASTER RELIEF
2021 has been a year of climate disasters. The extremes of our climate are becoming ever more acute - with -25C temperatures in Spain to a record-equalling 54.4C in Death Valley. And it is increasingly having a real-world impact. Just this summer – hundreds of sudden deaths in Canada were linked to a record heatwave; more than 200 people died in floods across Europe and more than 300 deaths were recorded in flash floods in China. According to the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), climate change has caused a surge in natural disasters over the past 50 years disproportionately impacting poorer countries. Code Green will support the most pressing challenges as and when they happen - working with our global community to ensure timely support where it matters most.
